  • The Department of Linguistics and Cognitive Science at the University of Delaware invites applications for a temporary assistant professor, to support the Department's teaching and advising needs. The appointment is expected to begin on August 16, 2024, and will run until August 31, 2025, with the possibility of renewal for up to a maximum of three years. We are seeking a candidate who demonstrates a strong commitment to undergraduate education. The primary responsibility of this position is to support the Department’s programs in Cognitive Science and Linguistics. Expertise in language acquisition and/or cognitive science is desirable. The successful candidate will be expected to teach a subset of the following courses: Introduction to Cognitive Science; Introduction to Linguistics; First Language Development; Topics in Cognitive Science; Psycholinguistics. Also desirable are Second Language Acquisition and Bilingualism; Structure of English; Sociolinguistics; Languages of the World. The successful candidate is also expected to demonstrate a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts within the department and the university. The Department of Linguistics and Cognitive Science (https://www.lingcogsci.udel.edu) offers a PhD in Linguistics, an MA in Linguistics and Cognitive Science, a BS in Cognitive Science (which includes a track for Pre-Professional Speech-Language Pathology), and a BA in Linguistics. The Department is comprised of 11 full-time faculty and enrolls approximately 30 PhD students, 15 MA students, 300 undergraduate majors and 60 minors.



    QUALIFICATIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES: We are seeking a candidate who demonstrates a strong commitment to undergraduate and graduate education in linguistics and cognitive science. Those who have a proven record of excellence in teaching in those disciplines are particularly encouraged to apply. The successful candidate will have a Ph.D. in linguistics, cognitive science, or a related field, and is expected to demonstrate a commitment to the department’s goals in diversity, equity, and inclusion.



    Department of Linguistics and Cognitive Science at UD: The Department of Linguistics and Cognitive Science at the University of Delaware (https://www.lingcogsci.udel.edu/) is within the College Arts and Sciences. The department has state-of-the-art laboratories in phonetics, phonology, syntax, and psycholinguistics. Research can also be conducted at the Center for Biomedical and Brain Imaging (https://cbbi.udel.edu). The department runs an internationally renowned Ph.D. program in Linguistics, an MA in Linguistics and Cognitive Science, a BS in Cognitive Science, and a BA in Linguistics. The department also offers, via a university-wide Cognitive Science Committee, an interdisciplinary certificate in Cognitive Science as part of graduate degrees across schools and departments. It is part of a university-wide cognitive science community and participates in a new interdisciplinary Ph.D. program in Neuroscience (https://www.udel.edu/academics/colleges/grad/prospective-students/programs/interdisciplinary/interdisciplinary-neuroscience/).
